Summit Martial Arts and Affiliate Schools Mourn the Lose of our Brother and Master Hanshi Ken Penland who passed away this last Sunday approximately 6:00 PM.
In Memory of Hanshi Ken Penland:
Our spirit is broken at the news of our Brother’s and Master’s recent departure from this world. What we resolve to do with this built up anguish is our own affair, as for myself I resolve to train harder to honor the teachings of Hanshi Penland.
As those before and with me, we have all been under the inflicted suffering of Hanshi Penland as a partner or Uke. I relish these moments. Training is measured in degrees of reality. The question we always suffer to answer, is the limits of pushing reality. Lessening the measure of reality has lead to watered down martial arts that has manifested itself in several styles and has left the coveted black belt a mockery – A prize that can be purchased instead of a symbol of achievement.
Hanshi Penland has instilled the sense of earning this symbol through hard work and dedication. Pushing the envelope of reality to insure the lessons learned are applicable in the realities of our everyday world. His greatest gift to his students through my eyes.
